sarah haskins

the controlling idea of the video is that hot chicks like smells. she shows several commericals that satire marketting techniques used by some products here in America, Sex sells and companys realize that. people know damn well that if you by mini cheese burgers from BK your not going to have beautiful women flock to you. but sub concisously people see that commerical and go Wow! i want a Burger shot! she implys that the only way to attract hot women is through smells, and also buying them things

my own goals in life(Police officer/Marine Corps)

all of my life i have wanted to be a Marine, and all my life everyone around me has told me not to. i never understood why, all i ever wanted to do is serve my country and people are telling me not to! how come my girlfriend can have ridiculously un realistic dreams and i have to follow with her blindly but i cant do what i want? why should me parents stop me from doing one of the most honorable things a man can do with his life? the only reason i am in college is that i have a full ride for football, other wise i would be finishing boot camp about right now.

they would say that im gonna get killed and that they dont wanna lose me in a war. they would say i need to go to college and get a degree, i dont care if i die in combat, thats what marines do. first ones in, last ones out. i dont need a degree to be a cop after im done with the Corp.

RR #4

If our forefathers didn’t have firearms, how would we have over thrown the British government? A huge reason for the second amendment that people do not realize is for the citizens of the USA to have the ability to protect themselves from the government. Some might say that is extremist and crazy and unpatriotic. But being patriotic has nothing to do with liking your government; it has to do with liking your country. To me, having the right to bear arms is more important than freedom of speech. Because you can talk all you want but its never gonna get anything done. Not to mention having the right to effectively protect your family from home invaders and criminals. Plus if even if you some how did remove the second amendment entirely or illegalize non hunting weapons such as assault rifles and handguns, people would not be having that! I can tell you right now that if the obama administration attempts to place the 1994 weapon contraband in affect again I and millions of Americans will be literally up in arms. LITERALLY. So if the government has any sense at all, it will stay the hell out of the way Americans and their guns. COME AND TAKE IT! Not to mention it will do nothing to stop crime! Criminals will still use guns, and they will still buy them illiegally, if you want something you can get it! So why not give law abiding citizens the right to protect themselves effectively against crime? If you take away the second amendment I will no longer call myself an American, guns freed this country, and citizens owning them is what keeps our freedom. Otherwise our government would be able to walk all over us without consequence. Not to mention since 40% of people in this country own guns and 80% Texans own guns. So how are you gonna take them away? Come to everyones house and say hand em over? That will go over well…. Haha! To me this isn’t even something worth arguing about. I and millions of other Americans would literally rather die than give up our guns, the same way I would die for this country. A Japanese emperor once said “ I would never attempt to invade America, there would be a gun behind every blade of grass”

the man in the irony mask; stephen colbert

i thought it was an interesting portrayl of mr colbert. its funny because the person he portrays on tv is aboslutly opposite of him as a person. in real life he is a family man, on tv he is a the sarcastic "conservative" news reporter. His show is growing more and more popular everyday and nowadays more people watch the "fake news" than they watch the real news.

Rhetorical response for Home Girl

Texas monthly’s interview of Erykah Badu was a very well written and interesting essay that kept me involved and eager to read more. Prior to reading this I had no idea who Miss Badu was, reading this article was very different from most in that it did not focus on her credentials, but rather focused her as a person. It put very little mention into her 4 Grammy awards, or really any of her fame at all. The mood and feeling that is set by the author is a very good example of how to change the setting with your writing. When she was at home with her children, I got a totally different feel than when she was out and about with the interviewer. At home it showed her soft and sensitive side as a mother, along with her spiritual side. But when she goes into the real world and cruises around her “old hood “you feel a more worldly sense to her. Despite myself not really caring for her music genre as a whole, I really respect her seemingly genuine respect for the music world. Another thing that was well done in this essay was the smoothness and transitions into each paragraph. One reason for this is because the author of the article obviously did not include every last detail about the day he spent with Erykah. This is something I jotted down in my notes for things to do in Essay #3. I like that Miss Buda seems to have stayed true to her roots as a Texan. Not your typical Texan, but none the less the Dallas music scene is glad to have her aboard with her many contributions to the industry. The Author seemed to go from a very distant perspective, to a very close perspective very effectively. I can’t decide if in my essay I will keep it 3rd, 1st , or both perspectives. But reading essays like this give me the ideas and ground work to do either one. Descriptions of the surroundings in this essay come effortlessly and are not forced on the reader at all. I hope to capture the person the same way shown in this article. Its always very easy to write about some ones credentials and accomplishments, but it will be difficult to replicate the sense of personality and environment shown in this article

free write; essay 2 topic

What is the reason for conflict between Great Britain and Northern Ireland? i chose this topic because its interesting to me and i think that alot of people are confused about the reality behind the fighting. i want to clear up in my paper that the IRA is not a terrorist group, and also explore more deeply into the heart of the issues, and past issues that created the turbulence that exists today in the 6 counties of Northern Ireland.

What is the reason for conflict between Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

The British have oppressed the Irish cathloic people in Northern Ireland for many years, this led to the formation of the IRA (Irish Republican Army). The IRA is viewed by some as a terrorist group but in reality they have always had a just cause in fighing against the oppressive British government.

How will answering this question be helpful to me?

People are ignorant to just how much the UK has oppressed people all over the world. From India, to Ireland, and of course the USA used to be a slave to British tyranny. Americans need to support things based off of right and wrong, not based off of who our war time allies are. At times when Britain is oppressive to people that dont deserve it we should step in and stop them. I just want to raise awareness about these types of things.

rhetorical response #2

I thought both essays were very engaging and well written. Both of them seemed to have their facts straight and sources well organized. The Tattoo crazy essay made me think about if I would hire someone to take care of my children if they were tatted up. That is an interesting question and I realized that I really don’t have any problem with tattoos. They can be tacky sometimes but overall I think people choose designs and art that is meaningful to them on a personal level. It was good to see some personality in the this essay also, her relating her own tattoos and sharing her experiences helps the reader become more involved and understand the topic. I can relate to her because I want to get a tattoo on my back with political meaning and my girlfriend will not have it! But it shows that writer is accurate in saying that people are judge you based of things they don’t understand. Now granted I disagree with her going as far to say that tattoos are this wonderful beautiful self expressionist act that can change your life. Unless you have a great reason to get tattooed, it is not very intelligent. If I was in the Marine Corp you can bet your ass I would have USMC tattoooed across my back with a devil dog or something next to it. But you can go ahead and know I will not go out and get something tattooed in Hebrew on my wrist or something meaningless(unless your Jewish). But I thought that overall she did a very good job in writing the paper, and keeping the reader entertained.

“We proudly brew star bucks coffee” left me with mixed feelings. On a positive note I thought It was really cool how she brought in the parts about the special moments with her dad. I though it was well written and used great descriptive words to narorrate the essay. Also almost everyone can relate to special moments with their parents like this. And just like the Tattoo essay it put you inside the essay by getting fairly personal. But I do have a bone to pick with star bucks. Before I offend the vanilla bean frappecino drinking elitists of the star bucks culture to much I will start off by saying that I like my coffee as much as anyone… I just don’t pay 5 dollars for it! Starbucks has created this little sub culture cool kid fad. It is just like Apple corporation, they market their products off of sexiness and the “ its cool to have this” neo beat nick attitude. Don’t get me wrong, I like Starbucks and Macs as much as the next guy, but people get Starbucks sometimes just to almost show off how cool they are. Walking around with the little green straws in your cup is almost a status symbol in TCU’s odd culture of Frat boys and princesses. Overall though both writers did an excellent job and kept me interested during reading.

In Class: what about the essay worries me?

im worried that the readers will not be able to relate at all to my feelings about my car. the topic might not be something most people will understand fully. i also dont know how i am gonna write 5-7 pages of stuff about my topic. sure i love my Muscle car and i love drag racing but there is only so much i can really say about it. i never get writers block and i always find something to say but at the same time for this particullar essay i dont know if it will be like that. i might not have to much time to work on it if i want to enjoy my weekend at all..

In Class:

I can not wait to go hunting, dove season opened up this morning. i wanna get away for a while... this schedule we are on right now is absolutly awful. i would do anything to be able to spend a weekend at the ranch. barbaqueing some brisket havin a beverage, wake up and go deer hunting. but i guess that cant happen for a while. i thought college would be fun, but it is absolute crap. the only thing keeping me here is football. football is fine but the stuff they make us academically is kiling me. all this signing in and study hall is so much B/S. Things will get better with time though i hope.

Rhetorical Response Blake Stone.

The biography of Blake Stone is a good example of how the internet can be dangerous. Even though nothing harmful came out of this situation you never know who could be on the other side of a chat room conversation. People use the internet to escape the monotony of their average and boring lives, they create alter egos, and invent individual personality characteristics unique to the person they have dreamed up. Jeramey seems to be like every middle school kid, in that he is a socially awkward and a confused little guy. When his grandmother keeps him while his parents are out doing lord knows what, he uses her internet to establish himself in an on line chat room called “Masquerade Ball”. He meets numerous people who we later find out are not who they say they are. Just like “Blake Stone” they are characters dreamed up by unconfident internet junkies who obviously have no life.
It is interesting how relationships can be developed on the internet. These people have absolutely no idea who the individuals they are talking to truly are, and the funny things is they seem to put trust and show actual jealously towards the relations amongst their fellow chatters. I think this story is ridiculous. Why on earth is this middle school kid online chatting with 30 year old nurses from Georgia? Where the hell is his parents shouldn’t they be getting home sooner than the grandma goes to sleep? What could they possibly be doing so late in the ever so exciting night life of Odessa, Texas? I guess that doesn’t really matter. Anyways, I don’t really understand what kind of chat room this is anyway how are they getting drunk and dancing in a chat room? If any one finds a chat room like that let me know! I thought the author did an excellent job of grabbing my attention though. He used little internet language and subconscious cues that we all know now days to show the emotions of the chatters which made the story interesting. I thought it was funny how he refused to give his phone number to the CalenderGal. It showed his innocence, and for a moment it made him a pubescent boy rather than Blake Stone. But one thing about the internet is having plenty of time to think of the perfect response. So he was able to stay in character long enough to not blow his cover. I still can’t get over the fact that this kid is sitting at the foot of his grandmother’s bed having sexually charged conversations with strangers. If you ask me that’s a little bit strange… I was watching “To Catch a Predator” last night and judging from what I have seen on television, these situations never end well. Before you know it some perverted middle aged man will track down little Jeramey and Chris Hansen will pop out of a closet and scold him. Good god I am off topic. I think parents need to do a better job of monitoring what their children are doing on the internet. Although this story is interesting I still say that people need to realize that things like chat rooms are not real life and serve absolutely no purpose. Blogs, networking sites, and chat rooms, though entertaining, can grab a hold of people’s lives and pull then down into a cycle of addiction that is as hard to break as some drugs habits. The narrator seems to be skipping out on his study habits also. He says himself that he sits and class and invents different scenarios and conversational possibilities for his chat room adventures. The way he describes this make believe ballroom with its interesting people and passer-byes is comical. This hierarchy of elitist chat room members shunning out the noobies looking for cyber sex makes me laugh at how seriously people take themselves. Like the conversations they are having are somehow above any of the other crap on the internet…

i became an authority on History with the combination of a fantastic memory, and alot of watching of the History channel. People wouldnt assume that the "big dumb football player types" can't harbor information or have a higher understanding and capacity for history. but i assure you when it comes to the past, i have got you covered. I have made a perfect score on every social studies taks test i have taken since the 3rd grade. i realized how good i was at Social studies/ history when i took my older sisters online Government and US History summer courses for her in the 8th grade. its a shame those grades arent on my GPA...

In Class: writing as inquiry

writing as inquiry; theres a lot of reasons to write, you might be doing it for class, or for pure enjoyment. but one things for sure, i suck at writing. i cant spell, or answer prompts effectivly, i dont really know how to spell inquiry, i had to look at my neighbors to do so. i guess im supposed to ramble on about nothing and dont look back. right after this class i have to walk across campus to do an hour long workout in 30 min so i have time to get to my musical theatre class that ends at 1220 then find time to eat then practice till 630. i dont have time to think so i guess this should come naturually.

Letter of Introduction; Ty Horn

My name is Ty Horn and i amfrom Waco, Texas. I will soon be a criminal justice major, and hope to one day work in law enforement. I play football here at TCU as an offensive tackle(#74), i am 6'5 305 pounds, and i love to work out. I attend TCU on a full scholarship for football, and came here because i liked the coaching staff and the success of the football program. If i were chancellor i would somehow change the social emphasis on greek life. A good teacher is one who cares about his/her students and treats you like an adult. If i could have dinner with 3 people alive or dead they would be; Al Capone, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and my Girlfriend Kelsey. 3 things you should know about me are that i play the guitar, drums, and the harmonica, I Love to hunt and fish, and I am a Texan before i am an American. I am currently in this course because our football academic advisor Shawn Worthen put me here. My High School put alot of emphasis on writing and i have alot of experience writing about literature.
